DEMOGRAPHIC INFORMATION
My name is Rick. I am Mexican-American, male. My parents were immigrants in this country. I grew up in a poor community in an Indian reservation. I went to Orange Glen High School in Escondido. I was the first person in my family to go to college. I was fortunate to go to the University of California, Santa Barbara. I am currently going to California State University San Marcos to get my teaching credential to teach Spanish at the high school level.
READINESS LEVEL
I have had many experiences working with youth. I have worked in summer camps, as a teaching assistant, tutor, and currently as a teacher candidate teaching Spanish.
I learned Spanish from my family early in my life. I continued my education of the Spanish language in high school. In college I majored in Spanish and had the opportunity to take most of my courses in Spain. There I was able to learn a Castilian Spanish and more about the country where the language originated from. I worked for the government for many years and was able to use my Spanish language skills to help people that only spoke Spanish.
My strengths are teaching the history and evolution of the language. I think I am good at explaining the linguistic differences between many Spanish speaking countries and its people. I try to make learning interesting and fun for my students. I play games with them and experiment with new teaching strategies that will engage them and make them think critically.
LEARNING PROFILE
I am very open person. I care about my students. I am very patient with them. I can relate with all types of people and get along very well with my students. I am strict with students that need the discipline but I typically have a relaxed attitude in the classroom. I find that boys especially respond well to me and respect my authority.
My motivation is helping students learn and succeed. I especially feel strongly about helping Hispanic males graduate high school and then continue their education into college. When I was in high school, I witnessed many of my friends drop out and that weighed heavily on me for many years. I promised I would one day be a teacher and help people like me achieve in school and help point them in the right direction.
My classroom management starts with one word: RESPECT. My biggest pet peeve is when students don't show respect for each other, the teacher, or the learning environment.
INTERESTS
In my spare time I like to exercise, watch sports, watch movies and travel. I love exploring new towns and places I've never been before. I have been fortunate to travel all over the country, Europe, and South American.
Music really brightens my day. I love listening to music on my way to work because it puts me in a good mood.
To introduce myself to the classroom I showed my students this presentation below.
